After Dark by Emi Gayle - Blog Tour

 After Dark
Release Date: October 31, 2012
Target Reader: Young Adult

What eighteen year old Mac Thorne doesn’t know will probably kill her.

In exactly eight months, five days, three hours and thirteen minutes, Mac has to choose what she’ll be for the rest of her life.

She has no choice but to pick. As a Changeling, it’s her birthright. To Mac, it’s a birthchore. Like going to school with humans, interacting with humans, and pretending to be human during the pesky daylight hours.

Once darkness descends, Mac can change into any supernatural form that exists—which makes her as happy as she can be. That is, until Winn Thomas, the biggest geek in her senior class figures out there’s more to what hides in the dark than most are willing to acknowledge.

In this first of the 19th Year Trilogy, Winn might know more about Mac than even she does, and that knowledge could end their lives, unless Mac ensures the powers-that-be have no choice but to keep him around.

My Review:

After Dark (The 19th Year #1) by Emi Gayle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Emi Gayle has written a unique paranormal romance/urban fantasy novel, I really enjoyed the characters, the story flows well and I found I had a hard time putting it down till I reached the end. Emi Gayle has done a fantastic job writing the first novel in the series, you know it’s good when a reader finishes the book and goes looking to see when the next book is coming out as I wanted more right away.

I liked that is was a bit different from what I have read lately in these genre’s, there were a few times I wished for more clarification on a few things but maybe more will be clarified in the next book. I still really enjoyed After Dark.

Mac is a changeling who basically can become any creature she wants, the only downfall is once Mac turns 19 years of age she has to decide on one form and keep that form for the rest of her life. Presently Mac is 18 years old, living among the humans and attending high school. It funny because Mac hates going to school and living with humans who she really only tolerates. When Mac meets Winn things change a bit for her, for one she ends up hanging around his friends and Winn. At first Mac only starts this friendship because Winn has a book that holds secrets to her life past and future.

But nothing is that simple, of course Mac and Winn start to have feelings for each other, and this is a great romance in the making. I loved it because Winn is not your typical character in the paranormal romance department who gets the girl. Winn and Mac make you laugh out loud, I loved Mac character she is strong independent, and quite snarky at times. Its great watching her realize she is falling for Winn.

So I will say I have rated After Dark a 4 star rating and I would recommend it to any of my friends who enjoy paranormal/urban fantasy/romance novels. And I seriously cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

Thanks to J.T. Publishing and Emi Gayle for the chance to read After Dark.

Interview with Emi Gayle:

1.              Which character you had most fun writing?

E:   They are ALL seriously fun, but Suze, the demon ... well ... he's a very funny character. I LOVED writing him.

2.            What was your main source of inspiration for the story?

E: Just knowing that in life we get options. We can choose our careers and change at will. Mac won't have that. I wanted to dive into the idea that there is NO possibility of change, but in reality, there is. Not for her. What would that cause, you know? That's where After Dark came about.

3.              How did you come up with the title of your book?

E: It hit me. Came to me before the story in fact. And of course, it's particularly important to Mac's character.

4.              Do you see writing as a career?

E: Honestly? No. I get inspiration from doing my real work. I love to write. It's truly a joy. I want to keep it that way.

5.    Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

E: I do! I LOVE hearing from readers and I try to respond to all the clearly-not-spam email that I get. :) They love to tell me how much they love my book, ask where they can buy them and how to get signed copies. The signed copies thing is something I need to figure out a better method for!

6.    Where do you hope to take your writing in the future?

E: Anywhere it takes me. I just want the freedom to write.

7.    What was one of the most surprising things you learned in writing your book?

E: That writing is the easy part. The editing and marketing is SO much harder!

8.    Is there anything additional you would like to share with your readers?

E: I just want to say 'Thank you!' I wouldn't be here without readers and I love them!

Any last thoughts or words of wisdom you would like to share with the readers?

E: I just want to encourage everyone. No matter what you're interested in, go for it. Strive for that rung of the ladder that's just one more inch up. Never stop learning, never stop growing and never stop challenging yourself. Keep at it! And enjoy whatever 'it' is!

Author Bio:

Emi Gayle just wants to be young again. She lives vicariously through her youthful characters, while simultaneously acting as chief-Mom to her teenaged son and searching for a way to keep her two daughters from ever reaching the dreaded teen years.

Ironically, those years were some of Emi's favorite times. She met the man of her dreams at 14, was engaged to him at 19, married him at 20 and she's still in love with him to this day. She'll never forget what it was like to fall in love at such a young age — emotions she wants everyone to feel.
